Helping Our Customers Develop a Sustainability Strategy
Our customers have a lot to consider
Akamai’s Corporate Sustainability Team is deeply committed to engaging with our customers to better understand their unique sustainability journeys. We believe that every conversation provides an opportunity to learn, whether it’s hearing about successes, understanding challenges, or identifying areas in which additional support could make a difference.
Some of our customers are seeking access to audited emissions data to meet reporting requirements and drive transparency. Others are working to procure renewable energy in key markets to power their operations more sustainably. While no two organizations are exactly alike, all share a common goal: advancing meaningful progress toward a more sustainable future.
By listening closely and collaborating thoughtfully, we aim to meet our customers where they are and provide the tools, insights, and partnerships that they need to accelerate their impact. Every sustainability journey matters, and we are proud to support our customers at every stage along the way.
Our customers will be up against a lot in the coming years; they will have to prioritize things like innovation and growth while balancing strategies for cost savings and regulatory compliance. At Akamai, we work with many customers who are highly engaged and attuned to the evolving sustainability conversation.
Akamai’s Director of Corporate Sustainability and ESG Officer Mike Mattera and I recently had the opportunity to share Akamai’s sustainability story at the SBS digital offsite in Sydney, Australia. The audience from SBS was not only highly engaged, but also showed a level of thoughtfulness and depth with their questions that was truly remarkable. This session was an example of some of the most insightful and meaningful discussions that we’ve had in recent memory.
It was inspiring to see a customer with sustainability at the forefront of conversations as we all move toward our environmental goals for 2030 and beyond.
We’ve had conversations with other customers who are much earlier in the development of their program or have set their own environmental goals for 2050 and are curious about how we will be able to achieve ours 20 years sooner. As the spectrum of sustainability needs comes further into focus, we see it as an opportunity to help.
Everyone is starting from a different point
If there’s one thing we’ve learned through hundreds of conversations with customers over the past few years, it’s that everyone is at a different point in their sustainability journey.
Some have developed well-reasoned environmental strategies, while others are still determining where to begin
Some are actively procuring renewable energy to offset their impact, while others are working to identify the right partners and pathways to move forward
Some have mature reporting processes in place to meet growing disclosure demands, while others are still navigating how and where to start reporting
These are big, important questions: What does achieving net zero really mean? How will we know when we’ve reached it? How can we meaningfully reduce power needs and minimize energy waste?
At Akamai, we recognize the complexity of these challenges. As we engage in these conversations, we aim higher to share insights, foster collaboration, and help our customers turn ambitious sustainability goals into tangible progress, no matter where they are on their journey.
Akamai has been developing and executing our sustainability strategy since 2009. We recognize that we don’t have all the answers, and we know that driving meaningful change takes hard work.
As more companies wrestle with some of these big questions, we see an opportunity for our community to lean in and help our colleagues fill some of these gaps.
Together, we have the knowledge, experience, and networks to help our customers:
- Set meaningful sustainability goals
- Gain deeper insights into their supply chains
- Procure renewable energy for the first time
- Build effective disclosure strategies
Some organizations may need help with individual building blocks like these, while others are looking for support in stepping back and connecting the pieces to form a broader, more cohesive strategy that drives real, lasting impact.
Imagine what we could achieve if we came together to break down barriers with just a modest amount of support. Sharing what we’ve learned, building momentum, and amplifying one another’s efforts can unlock real, meaningful progress.
Helping our customers set ambitious and achievable goals
At Akamai, we’re actively exploring ways to deepen our impact — whether that’s helping customers set bold sustainability goals, navigate challenges, or uncover new opportunities ahead. It all starts with understanding each business’s unique footprint, identifying where the biggest impacts and opportunities lie, and setting goals that are both ambitious and achievable.
It’s about ensuring that goals are grounded in data, connected to operations, and designed to scale over time — not just to check a box, but to drive real transformation.
By combining practical experience with a strategic approach, we can help our peers put the right foundations in place to act decisively and confidently.
These conversations couldn’t be more timely, and we’re energized by the possibilities ahead. When we meet this moment together — with the right goals, the right strategies, and the right support — we can turn ambition into lasting action. The best is yet to come; stay tuned for what lies ahead.
