Placing Accessibility at Akamai – In Reach
We support a number of employee interest groups at Akamai. Our newest, In Reach, focuses on disability and mental health conditions at work.
Encouraging and supporting open discussions about disability and mental health at work
We define disability as a condition that affects everyday activities — physically, cognitively, and/or neurologically. In Reach helps the Akamai community understand what disability means in the workplace. As a team, we also ensure disabled colleagues have the support they need to thrive – so that success is always "in reach."
Mixing practical action with theory
Our mission takes many forms. For example, we run practical programs such as weekly American Sign Language classes. Additionally, we host inspirational events, like our quarterly panel discussions on topics relating to disability inclusion and awareness. Furthermore, all In Reach programs are carefully promoted to managers, executives, and employees – an activity that in itself increases awareness.
Ultimately, we aim to normalize living and working with a disability — or multiple disabilities. Creating a safe space for dialogue and knowledge-sharing that supports anyone who may feel vulnerable. We respect employee needs and give them the support they deserve. Overall, we’ve seen that when awareness is high, collaboration and teamwork thrive.
In Reach strengthens the ethos that “we're all in this together,” perhaps we are dealing with different challenges, but we share a common goal: all-around health, along with awareness of and holistic support for each person.
Personal benefits
In Reach is also a safe space where people can process experiences, share stories, and ask questions without fear of rebuke or judgment.
Often, this is where the deepest effects occur. The conversations fostered by In Reach have the ability to change the lives of colleagues, and even create positive ripples that go out into our colleague’s communities, as well as our own. Many of the group members have felt that their involvement with In Reach has improved their confidence, helped them develop leadership skills, and provided networking opportunities with people they would not have otherwise met.
In Reach brings people across Akamai together, not only by placing success within reach, but also by providing the support and education everyone needs and deserves.
