Finding My Way as an Akamai Intern
It’s an exciting time to be starting a career in digital – but even more so when it’s at a company like Akamai. An organization driven by a commitment to developing talent within the industry, Akamai is an intellectually rigorous, demanding, and rewarding environment to be in at any level. But for new starters, programs like the summer internship can provide a 10- to 12-week opportunity to meet people and learn new skills – with real-world experiences, close working relationships, and access to subject matter experts.
For me, the internship experience helped me find my passion and place within this rapidly growing business. Based in the Network Operations Command Center, I was able to learn how to maintain Akamai’s edge network, handle different machines and servers, and build my skills to analyze the best ways to solve issues within the network. Being surrounded by so many experts from day one was a stroke of luck, allowing me to boost my experience and grow in this field.
Of course, settling into a new career in such a large organization is not just about the day-to-day work. I chose Akamai because of its culture and ambitions, too. This is a place where great and unique minds encourage new starters to keep developing and enhancing their skills, so we can keep revolutionizing technology into the future. It’s being around Akamai’s people that’s made me certain this is the kind of company I want to be a part of, and gives me motivation and purpose to come to work each day.
As I continue to grow in my role as Platform Operations Engineer Associate, I’m looking forward to what my future holds. If you’re an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate student thinking about where you should launch your career, Akamai’s internship program is an amazing place to start. My advice is to prepare for the unexpected and embrace the unknown – because it’s no regular job. Together, we’re creating and integrating products that benefit society and have the power to shape the world.
