Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the world’s largest and most trusted cloud delivery platform, today announced that it was among the select companies that Forrester invited to participate in: The Forrester Wave™: DDoS Mitigation Solutions, Q4 2017 evaluation. In this evaluation, Akamai was cited as a Leader in DDoS Mitigation Solutions.

According to the report, the distributed denial of services (DDoS) mitigation solution market is growing because S&R (security and risk) professionals understand that DDoS attacks are a threat to their digital business. Forrester’s research has found that having a DDoS mitigation solution in place is a best practice to protect internet-facing websites, applications, and infrastructure.

“Akamai has historically demonstrated strong leadership in the DDoS protection market,” said Josh Shaul, Vice President of Web Security, Akamai. “We have been protecting customers from large and sophisticated DDoS attacks for nearly two decades, introduced the first purpose-built DDoS protection solution in the cloud, and have continued to grow the most expansive DDoS mitigation platform in the world that has mitigated some of the largest attacks seen on the Internet - including a record-setting 623 Gbps attack in September 2016.”

The Forrester Wave report states that, “Akamai received favorable feedback on its ability to detect new attack types while yielding few false positives. Reference customers remarked on the company’s responsiveness, expertise, and ability to immediately stop attacks.”

In the Current Offering category, Akamai received the highest scores possible in eight criteria, including “Professional Services”, “Service Delivery”, and Threat Intelligence”. In addition, Akamai received the top scores possible in the Strategy category in the “Development and technical staffing”, as well as the “Account management staffing” criterion – the only evaluated company to receive the top score possible in the latter criterion.

The report also states that, “DDoS attacks originate all over the world. Cloud-based services need scrubbing capacity close to the origin in order to stop attacks before they affect the network.” Akamai also received the highest scores possible in the “Scrubbing centers” and “Security operations centers (SOCs)” criteria, within the current offering category.

Akamai’s scrubbing capacity exceeds 70 Tbps across its CDN (Kona), DDoS scrubbing (Prolexic), and authoritative DNS (Fast DNS) platforms. As part of Akamai’s capacity planning process, the company expects to continue to invest in growing its platforms with a goal of continuing to be able to readily mitigate the largest known attacks which are currently in the 1 Tbps range.

Akamai maintains close proximity to origins of attack traffic through the Akamai Intelligent Platform, which has widespread distribution with Edge servers in over 2,400 data centers, 1,300 cities, and 133 countries. Akamai received the highest scores possible in the “Latency” and “Mitigation Capacity” criteria.

“We believe Akamai’s position as a leader in the Forrester Wave™: DDoS Mitigation Solutions is not only the result of our nearly two decades of superior DDoS protection services and expertise, but also our customer-driven approach to remain at the cutting edge of what is needed today – and our propensity to share our vision and innovation with our customers in terms of how we intend to protect them in the future,” concluded Shaul.

Akamai also received the report’s top score possible in the “Planned Enhancements” criterion in the Strategy category.
