Climate change is of utmost concern in today's world, and data is widely acknowledged to play a crucial role in alleviating the effects. This urgent global crisis requires businesses to calculate emissions and understand their environmental footprints to be able to take proactive steps to minimize them.

Therefore, emissions calculators are becoming indispensable tools, allowing organizations to quantify emissions from various sources, help establish emission reduction targets, and ultimately enhance their overall sustainability efforts.

Data-driven acceleration of decarbonization

At Akamai, we understand that granular product-level reporting at scale allows companies to pursue concrete and actionable abatement levers that ultimately help to accelerate decarbonization of their supply chains. Accurate, data-powered, and transparent calculations can improve the quality of benchmarks to more closely comply with international standards. This data can feed into leadership decisions, transparency initiatives, and impact reports to demonstrate incremental progress.

According to CDP’s Global Supply Chain Report 2022, 6,520 organizations have committed to developing a climate transition plan within two years and 4,100 have already developed a 1.5 °C–aligned plan. Quantifying emissions and environmental impacts will be an integral part of continuing to accelerate this process.

Our Carbon Calculator offers direct engagement

To support our customers and their commitment to responsibility, Akamai has created an emissions calculator that assesses individual customer use of the Akamai platform. This calculator has been seamlessly incorporated into the Akamai Control Center and is accessible to all customers who use our delivery products.

We are excited to introduce the latest version of our emissions calculator, the "Traffic — Carbon Calculator (New)." This calculator provides an upgraded report that is part of our expanding collection of data tools, and is easily accessible in the Traffic Reports section of the main portal menu. Customers can now engage with this new report directly from the general navigation area within the Control Center.

Users can customize and see even more data

Customers also have the ability to further customize what they want to see. When users access the report, they can choose a specific subset of traffic using content provider codes (CP codes).

Additionally, they can customize the date range and apply various filters, including delivery type (secure/insecure traffic) and country/area.

The new Carbon Calculator report drastically improves performance and supports up to 400 days of data, enabling yearly views and year-over-year comparisons (Figure).

The updated version of the Carbon Calculator is supported by the Reporting API v2, which is a much more flexible, powerful API that allows for multidimensional queries, advanced filtering and sorting, and asynchronous querying with pagination.

It also introduces a new CSV format that provides a more robust and flexible form of data export. The new emissions endpoint is documented in TechDocs.*

A unique level of visibility into estimated emissions

As many of our customers prepare to disclose their environmental impacts publicly in the coming years, they will require a detailed understanding of their supply chain. Our updated Carbon Calculator provides a unique level of visibility into their use of Akamai Connected Cloud, which could in fact represent a material piece of their overall supplier emissions.

At a glance, customers can see the total bytes delivered and the calculated emissions in grams, kilograms, and metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalency for ease of reporting. The information provided by the calculator also highlights a view of estimated emissions by country, color-coded by the volume of bytes and emissions, from low to high.

Understand and reduce your carbon footprint

Our in-depth approach to emissions measurement coupled with our industry-leading analytics expertise provides a more customized way for customers to understand their impact while using our platform.

With our advanced measurement approach and more user-focused strategy, our updated carbon emissions calculator will be a practical tool for customers who seek to understand and ultimately reduce their carbon footprint on Akamai Connected Cloud.
