Akamai Celebrates Earth Day with a Cleanup of Rio Agres
On a bright Friday morning, in commemoration of Earth Day, our dedicated team from Akamai gathered by the banks of Rio Agres, one of the most significant rivers in Escazú, Costa Rica. This scenic river flowing through the heart of our community was the site of our latest volunteering event. Our mission? To clean up the river and prevent trash from reaching our precious oceans.
Coming together for a cause
The turnout was incredible. Thirty volunteers, all fueled by a shared sense of responsibility for our environment, arrived ready to make a difference. Equipped with gloves, bags, shovels, and an unyielding spirit, we set out to tackle the various types of waste that had accumulated along the riverbanks and in the riverbed.
We coordinated with the local police and municipality to ensure the safe and efficient transfer of the trash bags. This collaboration was essential in managing the significant amount of waste we gathered.
We encountered a wide array of debris, from plastics, cans, and glass bottles to wires and construction materials. We used shovels to retrieve items stuck in the riverbed, ensuring a thorough cleanup. Although the sight of so much waste was disheartening, it only strengthened our resolve: Each piece of trash we picked up was one less item that could harm marine life or pollute our waters.
The impact of our efforts
By the end of the day, we had collected an impressive amount of waste. The piles of full trash bags were a testament to our hard work and dedication. It was a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we come together for a common cause.
This event did more than just clean up the river; it fostered a sense of community and environmental stewardship. It was inspiring to see colleagues from different departments working side by side, united by the goal of making our environment cleaner and safer.
Reflections and future plans to protect the environment
As we stood by the cleaner Rio Agres, we felt a deep sense of accomplishment. However, the day's work also highlighted the ongoing need for such efforts. Keeping our rivers and oceans clean is a continuous task that requires vigilance and collective action.
We plan to organize more events like this in the future, not only to protect the environment but also to educate and inspire others in our community. By raising awareness about the impact of littering and the importance of recycling, we hope to prevent waste from ending up in our waterways in the first place.
A call to action
Our river cleanup was just one small step toward a healthier planet, but it’s a step we are proud of. We encourage everyone to get involved in their own way. Whether it’s participating in local cleanups, reducing personal waste, or advocating for environmental policies — every action counts.
Let's continue to work together to protect and preserve our environment. After all, the health of our rivers and oceans is crucial for the well-being of our planet and future generations.
